Me Talk Pretty Some Day

Staining ruby with a little sediment.  Intense Tangerine Dream flows out: floral, tropical and beautifully crammed tight with Borkum Riff and sweaty saddle, a bit of alcohol strains the high citrus note through a colander of grating minerality while in the mouth tahini and cassis pie cherry takes this brilliant patina’d Dry Creek Valley wonder on through the night cleanly and neatly into a crisp finish SOOOO not pendantic though I’m guessing it’s practically 15-oh.  So sure of itself.  Light on its feet.  Delicate even.  So pretty.  Just plain PRETTY.

You know I live right here smack dab in the middle of some pretty awesome Syrah country: Santa Barbara and Santa Ynez and Los Alamos and while numerous producers manage to rein in the balance on some of their monsters, they will never taste anything like RRV or DCV Syrah. There’s a redwood, cedar, petrichor note hard to define so visible–even in the higher alcohols–in Sonoma Syrah which they do not achieve here except with certain picking styles at Whitehawk or Camp 4.  The Sonoma’s typically arrive under a blanket of balance and finesse while Santa Ynez is stuck doing the bull-in-a-china-shop routine so popular with tourists.

This thing lacks no ripeness, but carries it not on chewy over-wrought fruit and concentration, but on smart clouds of earthy calmness and relaxed pencil-lead voracity. Just plain pretty.  There’s no other word for it.
